Ecoart in Action with M. Annenberg and Dr. Aviva Rahmani
Join us for a conversation on environmentalist practices with M. Annenberg and Dr. Aviva Rahmani, contributor and editor, respectfully, of Ecoart in Action. They will discuss the creation of the book, it’s importance as a compendium of some international thinking about an emerging genre that addresses our current environmental crises, and critical media literacy. All attendees must be vaccinated and masked at all times indoors.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
M, Annenberg is a Conceptual artist. Her paintings, installations and sculptures focus on under reported stories in the American press, concentrating on scientific studies and global warming. She recently curated the exhibit, Earth on the Edge, 2021, in New York City. Her artwork deconstructs the uneven reporting of five major climate studies – The Emissions Gap Report, 2019, the Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment, The National Climate Assessment, the Paris Climate Treaty, and the UN’s 5th IPCC Report. Annenberg’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States, among them, Flomenhaft Gallery, Raandesk Gallery, the Puffin Room Gallery and the Makor Gallery in New York City. Additional information about the artist can be found on her website, www.mannenberg.com.
Dr. Aviva Rahmani’s time-based ecoart projects, including The Blued Trees Symphony and Ghost Nets on ocean health, fresh water, land restoration and fire regimes are exhibited in museums and galleries, published and written about internationally. Venues include Various Small Fires and the Thomas Erben galleries, the Independent Museum of Contemporary Art, Cyprus; Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMCA), CO; Hudson River Museum, NY; Cincinnati Center for Contemporary Art, (CCA) OH; and the Joseph Beuys 100 days of Conference Pavilion, for the 2007 Venice Biennale, Italy. Fellowships and grants include New York Foundation for the Arts, MAP Fund, A Blade of Grass and the National Endowment for the Arts. Rahmani’s PhD is from Plymouth University, UK, her Masters from CalArts and she is an Affiliate at the Institute for Arctic and Alpine Research, University of Colorado, Boulder. ABOUT Ecoart in Action: Activities, Case Studies, and Provocations for Classrooms and Communities
Ready-to-go, vetted approaches for facilitating artistic environmental projects
How do we educate those who feel an urgency to address our environmental and social challenges? What ethical concerns do art-makers face who are committed to a deep green agenda? How can we refocus education to emphasize integrative thinking and inspire hope? What role might art play in actualizing environmental resilience?
Compiled from 67 members of the Ecoart Network, a group of more than 200 internationally established practitioners, Ecoart in Action stands as a field guide that offers practical solutions to critical environmental challenges. Organized into three sections–Activities, Case Studies, and Provocations–each contribution provides models for ecoart practice that are adaptable for use within a variety of classrooms, communities, and contexts.
Educators developing project and place-based learning curricula, citizens, policymakers, scientists, land managers, and those who work with communities (human and other) will find inspiration for integrating art, science, and community-engaged practices into on-the-ground environmental projects. If you share a concern for the environmental crisis and believe art can provide new options, this book is for you
